I define diversity very, very broadly because people bring a lot of experiences with them. Even though many people might find themselves at this place at this time, it does not necessarily mean that they both had the same journey to get here. Our office works with the six health science schools on their diversity, recruitment, and retention and what I like to call cultural management programs. We have a ton of resources that we can bring to bear to help students to achieve their goals and their dreams and I like connecting people and opportunities. And we do a lot of workshops on implicit bias, getting people to understand who they are within the context of the work that they do, or the study that they do here on campus to give them an opportunity to be more fully themselves as they become clinical practitioners, and also in the work that they do with their patients or clients every day.
One of the beauties of diversity is that people do bring different thoughts and different feelings to the table. Those different perspectives are what helped us to solve problems. Inclusive Excellence means that everyone has heard, everyone has an opportunity to participate, so that we do have an opportunity to bring the best minds to the table. I'd like for those students who are incoming to know that the Office of Health Sciences Diversity is here to help them and whatever their needs might happen to be. We want to make sure that everyone is comfortable in whatever educational pursuit they are engaged. And if they do have instances where they feel that they are not heard, they can let us know and we will help them. Any student who has an issue can feel free to call our office or shoot me an email. And what I will do is talk with that student and find out what they're thinking and how they're feeling. And then have an opportunity to talk with the folks in the school that they happen to be enrolled to find out what the cultural grounding might be in that school and how that might have an impact on the students experience. And the goal is always to reach a resolution that's going to enable the student to move forward as comfortably as they possibly can. And to make sure that if something happened that should not have that it will not happen again. Everyone is welcome here at Pitt and there is a place for everyone. And whatever their interest might happen to be whatever their goals might happen to be. We're committed to helping them achieve them.
